Hakeem vs. Louisville in '83 Final Four

Lewis Has Support of Former Players

From the Houston Chronicle, February 6, 1996
by Dale Robertson:

Clyde Drexler said he was surprised Guy Lewis failed to receive enough votes to enter the Basketball Hall of Fame. But Hakeem Olajuwon said he wasn't shocked.

"Teams from Texas, they always overlook us on the national level," Olajuwon said. "So it's not too surprising to me. But he's going to get what he deserves. He coached for 30 years, and he was a great coach for me. He laid a strong foundation. Players like Clyde and myself, we speak for ourselves. That's enough to put him in the Hall of Fame. But the main thing is for him to keep trying, and he'll be recognized. He's going to get what he deserves one day."

Said Drexler: "Guy's a legend, certainly in these parts but also around the world. I don't think there's any reason for him to not be in. If you look at his record, he was a genius. There's no reason for him not to be recognized as one of the best."
